The BASEL (BActeriophage SElection for your Laboratory) collection comprises 106 well-characterized E. coli phages representing over 30 genera. This completed collection includes 37 newly isolated phages that were previously inaccessible due to the lack of O-antigen glycans and resident bacterial immunity in standard E. coli K-12 laboratory strains. The collection includes diverse viral groups such as Kagunavirus, Nonanavirus, Gordonclarkvirinae, Gamaleyavirus, and Wifcevirus. These phages have been deeply characterized genomically and phenotypically regarding host receptors, sensitivity to antiviral defense systems, and host range, providing a valuable resource for studying phage-host interactions and their molecular mechanisms.
